BAT is the token of the Brave browser, which blocks ads by default and pays users BAT for opting into its own privacy-preserving ad system instead. It is one of the oldest crypto projects with a real consumer product and tens of millions of monthly users, though the share of those users who actually engage with the token has always been modest. BAT sits inside the Brave browser and attempts something the advertising industry has resisted for two decades: paying users directly for their attention while blocking tracking. Users who opt into privacy-preserving ads receive BAT, and publishers can be tipped in it. It is one of the very few crypto tokens embedded in a consumer product with millions of actual users, which makes it unusual on this map — most tokens here have no consumer distribution at all. Whether that distribution translates into token demand is a separate question from whether the browser is used.
How does BAT work?
Users of the Brave browser who opt into privacy-preserving ads receive BAT, and can tip publishers with it. Tracking is blocked by default.
Why is it unusual on this map?
It is embedded in a consumer product with a large real user base. Most tokens here have no consumer distribution of any kind.
Does browser usage translate into token demand?
Not automatically. Distribution creates supply to users; converting that into sustained demand for the token is a separate and harder problem.
What problem is it addressing?
That online advertising funds itself through surveillance. The model pays users directly instead of monetising their behavioural data.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places BAT on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
