dYdX runs perpetual futures with a real order book rather than an AMM, and in 2023 it left Ethereum entirely for its own Cosmos chain so the order book and matching engine could be validator-operated rather than hosted by the company. That move traded convenience for decentralisation and is one of the clearest cases of a major DeFi application choosing to leave its home chain. dYdX moved from being an application on Ethereum to running its own dedicated chain, so that order matching, which had been off-chain, could be decentralised across validators. That is an unusual step: most protocols move towards shared infrastructure, not away from it. It trades a simpler user experience for control over the full stack. DYDX is used for staking and governance of that chain. On this map it sits with derivatives venues, and its revenue depends on perpetual futures volume rather than spot activity.
Why did dYdX build its own chain?
To decentralise the order book and matching engine, which had been operated off-chain. That required control over block production rather than sharing a general-purpose chain.
What is DYDX used for?
Staking to secure the chain and governance of protocol parameters, with fee distribution to stakers.
Is it a spot exchange?
Primarily perpetual futures. Its revenue tracks derivatives volume, which behaves differently from spot trading through market cycles.
What is the trade-off of a dedicated chain?
Full control over performance and matching, at the cost of a more complex user experience and no inherited liquidity from a larger ecosystem.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places DYDX on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
