EigenLayer introduced restaking: letting already-staked ETH be pledged a second time to secure other services, so a new network can rent Ethereum's economic security instead of bootstrapping its own validator set. The trade-off is layered risk — the same stake now backs several systems at once — and the project has since broadened into EigenCloud, extending the model beyond consensus to verifiable off-chain compute. EigenLayer created the restaking category: staked ETH can be committed to secure additional services, and in return earns additional rewards while accepting additional slashing conditions. The idea is that new networks should not have to bootstrap their own validator economies from zero. The open question — and it is a serious one — is systemic: if a large amount of the same collateral secures many services, a failure in one could cascade. EIGEN is the governance and coordination token for that system, not a claim on staking yield.
