About XRP

XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain launched in 2012 by Ripple Labs and designed for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and currency exchange. Banks and payment providers have used Ripple's technology to settle international transfers in seconds rather than days, and the token itself functions as a bridge asset between currencies on the ledger. XRP is used on the XRP Ledger, a payments-focused chain with fast settlement and very low fees, built for moving value between currencies rather than for running general-purpose smart contracts. That gives it a different profile from most large caps on this map: its price has historically reacted strongly to regulatory news in the United States, and it can move sharply while the rest of the board is quiet. On a sector view, XRP often behaves less like the Layer 1 smart-contract group and more like a category of its own, which is why comparing its colour against the wider market is usually more revealing than comparing it against a single peer.

Quick answers
Is XRP a smart-contract platform like Ethereum?

No. The XRP Ledger is built for payments and asset issuance with fast, cheap settlement. It has added programmability over time, but it is not a general-purpose smart-contract chain in the way Ethereum is.

Why does XRP sometimes move on its own?

Its price has historically been sensitive to legal and regulatory developments specific to it. That can produce large moves while the rest of the market is flat, which shows up on a bubble map as a strongly coloured bubble in an otherwise grey field.

Does XRP need mining?

No. The XRP Ledger uses a consensus protocol run by a set of validators rather than proof-of-work mining, so there is no block reward and no mining issuance.

Where does XRP rank by market cap?

It is consistently among the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, which is why its bubble is one of the bigger ones on the map. The live rank shown above updates with current data.

XRP next to other Layer 1 coins

Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places XRP on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
