Algorand is a proof-of-stake layer-1 founded in 2017 by MIT cryptographer Silvio Micali, built around a pure proof-of-stake design where blocks are final within seconds and no validator can fork the chain. Its focus has shifted toward institutional and government pilots — tokenised bonds, national digital currency trials and carbon-credit registries — rather than retail DeFi, which is why its on-chain activity looks different from most smart-contract chains. Algorand's pure proof-of-stake design finalises blocks in seconds and, by construction, cannot fork: a block is either committed or it is not. Validator selection is randomised and secret until a block is proposed, which removes the incentive to attack any particular participant. The project's commercial focus has been institutional and governmental — tokenised bonds, central bank digital currency pilots, carbon registries — rather than retail DeFi, so on-chain activity looks different from most smart-contract chains of comparable size. On a market map ALGO generally moves with broad altcoin sentiment rather than with measurable network usage.
What does it mean that Algorand cannot fork?
Its consensus commits a block only when agreement is reached, so there are no competing chain tips to resolve later. Once a block is final it stays final, usually within seconds.
Why is Algorand's on-chain activity different from other chains?
Much of its usage has come from institutional and public-sector pilots rather than from retail DeFi and trading, so transaction patterns do not resemble those of chains dominated by speculation.
What is ALGO used for?
It pays transaction fees, participates in consensus, and is used within the applications and tokenised assets issued on the network.
Is a low fee a sign of low usage?
Not necessarily. Fees depend on the network's design as well as on demand for block space. Algorand's fees are low by design regardless of load.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places ALGO on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
