About Canton

Canton is the native token of the Canton Network, an institutional-grade blockchain built by Digital Asset for tokenizing real-world assets with strict transaction privacy. It uses the Daml smart-contract language and a fair-launch, no-pre-mine model where fees are burned and new tokens minted to reward builders and validators. Backers include Goldman Sachs, IBM and Blackstone, with Franklin Templeton, J.P. Morgan and HSBC among the institutions piloting it. Canton is aimed squarely at regulated finance rather than open crypto: it is a network of interoperable applications where each participant controls who can see its data, which is a hard requirement for institutions that cannot publish positions to a public ledger. That privacy-by-partition model is the whole point, and it is also why its on-chain activity cannot be read the way a public chain's can. On this map CC is best understood as an institutional infrastructure asset; comparing its behaviour with retail-driven Layer 1 tokens is not a like-for-like comparison.

Quick answers
How is Canton different from a public blockchain?

Data is partitioned so each participant sees only the transactions it is party to, rather than everything being visible to everyone. That is designed for regulated institutions with confidentiality obligations.

Why can't Canton's activity be read like other chains?

Because transaction data is not globally public by design. Standard on-chain analytics do not apply in the same way.

Who is Canton built for?

Regulated financial institutions and the applications they run, where interoperability between systems matters and public disclosure of positions is not acceptable.

Does that make it less decentralised?

It makes different trade-offs. Confidentiality and permissioning are features for its intended users and limitations from an open-network perspective.
