Chainlink is the leading decentralized oracle network, launched in 2017 to securely connect smart contracts on any blockchain to real-world data like asset prices, weather and sports outcomes. Its price feeds are used across most major DeFi protocols to determine collateral values and liquidations, making it foundational infrastructure rather than a consumer-facing app. Chainlink solves a problem that sounds mundane and is not: a smart contract cannot see anything outside its own chain, so every lending protocol that liquidates a position and every derivative that settles depends on a price fed in from outside. If that feed is wrong or manipulable, the contract fails no matter how well written it is — and several of the largest DeFi losses have been oracle manipulations rather than code bugs. Chainlink aggregates across independent node operators and data sources to make that harder. On this map it is the reference asset for the data layer that the rest of DeFi depends on.
Why can't a smart contract read prices itself?
A blockchain is deterministic and isolated — every node must reach the same result, so contracts cannot call outside data sources directly. Oracles bring the data in and record it on-chain.
Why is oracle security so important?
Liquidations and settlements execute on whatever price the oracle reports. Several of the largest DeFi losses came from manipulated price feeds rather than from bugs in the protocols themselves.
How does Chainlink reduce that risk?
It aggregates reports from many independent node operators drawing on multiple data sources, so no single feed or operator can move the reported price.
What is LINK used for?
Node operators are paid in LINK for delivering data, and it is staked as an economic guarantee of honest reporting.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places LINK on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
