About LayerZero

LayerZero is a messaging protocol that lets contracts on one chain call contracts on another, used by many bridges and cross-chain apps rather than being a bridge itself. Its security rests on two independent parties — an oracle and a relayer — having to agree on a message, a design that avoids one large pooled honeypot but places trust in that pair not colluding. LayerZero provides messaging between chains, letting applications deploy across many networks while behaving as one — the omnichain model, where a token is burned on one chain and minted on another rather than locked in a bridge. That design removes the pooled collateral that made bridges such attractive targets. Its security model rests on configurable verification, which means the safety of any given deployment depends on how the application configured it — a nuance that matters more than the protocol's own security claims.

Quick answers
What does LayerZero do?

It passes messages between blockchains so an application can operate across many networks as if it were on one, without a traditional locked-collateral bridge.

Why is that safer than a bridge?

Traditional bridges hold pooled collateral, which concentrates value in one contract and makes it a target. Burn-and-mint messaging removes that pool.

What determines a deployment's security?

Verification is configurable, so the safety of any particular application depends on how it configured its verifiers — not on the protocol's defaults alone.

What is ZRO used for?

Governance and fee mechanisms within the protocol.
