About THORChain

THORChain lets people swap native assets across chains — real BTC for real ETH — without wrapping either into a token first, using RUNE as the settlement asset that every pool is paired against. That design means RUNE demand scales with the value locked in the network, and it also means the chain carries the risk of holding real assets: it was drained several times in 2021 and rebuilt after each. THORChain does something no other protocol on this map does at scale: it swaps native assets across chains — real bitcoin for real ether — without wrapping either. That requires holding liquidity in native form on each chain, which is technically difficult and has produced several exploits in its history, all of which the protocol repaid from its own reserves. RUNE is bonded by validators and paired against every pool, so its value is structurally tied to the liquidity the network holds. That linkage is deliberate and is the most distinctive thing about its design.

Quick answers
What makes THORChain different from a bridge?

It swaps native assets directly — actual BTC for actual ETH — rather than issuing wrapped representations. No wrapped token is created in the process.

How is RUNE tied to the network?

It is bonded by validators and paired against every liquidity pool, so the amount of RUNE required scales with the liquidity the network holds.

Has it been exploited?

Yes, several times in its history, and the protocol repaid affected liquidity providers from its reserves. Cross-chain native swaps are genuinely difficult to secure.

Why does that history matter?

It is evidence about both the difficulty of the problem and how the protocol responded. Both are relevant to assessing it.
