ORDI was the first BRC-20 token, created in 2023 as an experiment in whether fungible tokens could be issued on Bitcoin by inscribing text into individual satoshis. It has no team, no utility and no roadmap — the standard itself was written as a proof of concept — yet it drove a wave of Bitcoin network congestion and reopened a long argument about what the chain is for. ORDI was the first token issued under the BRC-20 experiment, which used the Ordinals protocol to inscribe data on individual satoshis and thereby create fungible tokens on Bitcoin — a chain never designed for them. The mechanism is inefficient by any technical standard, and that is precisely why it is significant: it showed that demand for token issuance would find a way onto Bitcoin regardless of whether the base layer supported it. It also drove up Bitcoin transaction fees materially, which is a real spillover effect worth understanding.
What is a BRC-20 token?
A fungible token created by inscribing text data onto individual satoshis using the Ordinals protocol. Bitcoin has no native token standard, so the mechanism works around the base layer rather than with it.
Why is it considered inefficient?
Token state is maintained by interpreting inscriptions rather than by protocol-level accounting, which consumes block space that could carry ordinary transactions.
Did it affect Bitcoin itself?
Yes. Inscription activity drove Bitcoin transaction fees up materially during peak periods, affecting all users of the network.
Why does ORDI matter historically?
It was the first token of the experiment and demonstrated that demand for issuance would reach Bitcoin regardless of base-layer support.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places ORDI on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
