About yearn.finance

Yearn automates yield farming: deposits go into vaults whose strategies move capital between lending markets and pools so users are not chasing rates by hand. Its 2020 launch is still cited as the reference fair launch — no presale, no investor allocation, no founder allocation, with all 30,000 YFI distributed to users, which is why the token trades at a price unlike anything else in DeFi. Yearn introduced the idea of a vault that moves deposits between strategies automatically, so a depositor gets a managed yield position rather than having to chase opportunities manually. Its launch is also remembered for a fair distribution with no pre-mine or investor allocation, which was unusual then and remains rare. The sector has grown far more competitive since, and Yearn's share of it has narrowed. On this map YFI is a small-cap with an unusually high unit price, which is purely a function of its very small supply.

Quick answers
Why is one YFI so expensive?

Because total supply is very small. Unit price says nothing about the size of a protocol — market capitalisation, which is what determines bubble size, is far smaller than the price per token suggests.

What does a yield vault do?

It pools deposits and allocates them across strategies automatically, rebalancing as opportunities change, so depositors do not manage positions themselves.

What was notable about YFI's launch?

There was no pre-mine and no investor allocation — the entire supply was distributed to users, which was rare then and remains rare now.

What are the risks of a yield vault?

Smart-contract risk in the vault and in every strategy it uses, plus the risk of the underlying protocols it deploys into.
