About Sui

Sui is a layer-1 blockchain launched in 2023 by Mysten Labs, a team of former Meta engineers who worked on the Diem project, built around the Move programming language for safer smart contracts. Its object-centric data model allows independent transactions to process in parallel rather than one at a time, aiming for higher throughput than older account-based chains. Sui stores state as independent objects rather than as one global ledger of accounts, which lets transactions that do not touch the same objects execute in parallel and settle very quickly. In practice that suits consumer applications, games and high-frequency trading more than it suits complex composable DeFi, and the ecosystem has grown in that direction. On a bubble map Sui behaves like a newer, mid-sized Layer 1: percentage moves are typically larger than those of the established chains above it, and it tends to move with risk appetite for newer chains rather than with Bitcoin.

Quick answers
What is the object model in Sui?

State is represented as discrete objects with owners rather than as balances in one global ledger. Transactions that touch different objects do not conflict, so they can be executed in parallel.

What is SUI used for?

It pays transaction and storage fees, is staked to secure the network, and is used in governance.

Why are newer Layer 1 tokens more volatile?

They are generally smaller by market cap and have thinner order books, so the same amount of buying or selling moves the price further. On a bubble map that shows up as small bubbles with strong colour.

How does Sui differ from Aptos?

Both grew out of the same technical lineage and use the Move language, but they made different choices about state and consensus. Sui's object model allows more parallel execution for simple transfers.

Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places SUI on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
