Litecoin was created in 2011 by Charlie Lee as one of the earliest Bitcoin forks, often described as "silver to Bitcoin's gold." It uses the same proof-of-work model but with faster block times and a different mining algorithm, aiming to be a lighter, quicker payments coin than Bitcoin itself. It remains one of the longest continuously running cryptocurrencies and is widely supported across exchanges and wallets. Litecoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies still in continuous use, launched as a lighter counterpart to Bitcoin with faster blocks and a different mining algorithm. It has changed little by design, which is the point: it functions as a payments network with long uptime and deep exchange liquidity rather than as a platform for applications. Its halving schedule mirrors Bitcoin's on a different timetable. On a bubble map LTC usually behaves as a large, relatively steady altcoin — it participates in market-wide moves but rarely produces the outsized percentage swings seen in newer assets of similar market cap.
How does Litecoin differ from Bitcoin?
Faster target block times, a different proof-of-work algorithm, and a larger supply cap. The overall design is deliberately similar; the differences are parameters rather than architecture.
Does Litecoin have halvings?
Yes. Block rewards halve on a fixed schedule, in the same way as Bitcoin's but on its own timetable.
Is Litecoin used for payments?
It is one of the more widely accepted cryptocurrencies at payment processors, helped by low fees and fast confirmation relative to Bitcoin.
Why is LTC less volatile than smaller coins?
It has a large market cap and deep liquidity across exchanges, so a given amount of trading moves the price less. That is a tendency, not a guarantee.
Market cap decides how big a bubble is drawn, so rank is what places LTC on the map relative to the rest of its sector.
